Title: Stellram CNC software
Post by Daren on Oct 9th, 2018, 10:15am
Whilst sorting through my Psion stuff I found a rather nice set of software, it consists of 2 32k Datapaks both boxed and the manual for the software. One of the Datapaks is labelled advanced software pack, the other is labelled tool file data pack. The whole lot looks like it has never been used and is in very nice condition, a cursory glance through the manual indicates that it is a specialised suite of software for use with CNC machines, for working out cutting parameters for milling, turning, threading and so on, it also appears to be able to communicate with a CNC machine via RS232 - although since I am unfamiliar with CNC machines I do not really understand to what degree or even how useful it may be nowadays.

Anyway, I am willing to sell it for £20 plus postage charged at cost (probably about £5 UK, £10 elsewhere at a guess)

If interested send me a DM, I am hapoy to take pictures and test it to a limited degree if required.

Dear Daren

I'm interested because I have some OPL's on my LZ64 that help me with my wood-cutting CNC machine.

I think Stellram® is now a brand of metal working tooling using 'patented' inserts. I think the time line is;  Stellram® > ATI Stellram® >  Kennametal  acquires the Stellram® portfolio.

If you could post here the 'contact us - address details' page of the manual you have that may help me track the company behind the Stellram CNC software, because there was a UK company Stellram Manufacturing Ltd 1992 - 1996.

Jaap are you thinking of putting this on your web-site? Could I contribute in some way?

Watching with interest
Sincerely and in good faith
Martin

Yes, I would like to put them (OPK files and manual) on my site.
I'd prefer to get hold of the originals in order to make photos.

I could buy them and would be happy to sell them on to you afterwards, or you could buy them and lend them to me temporarily, either way works for me.
Cheers,
Jaap

Dear Jaap

It would be best if you kept everything together with your collection. I will be happy to try it out in Jape and read the manual on-line. I'm interested in looking at what use they made of the Organiser with a CNC machine! If I see something interesting I'll probably have a go at writing the routines and integrating them into my 'workshop' app.

I just thought that if you have an ebay account you could send a personal message with the email address and I could donate a small amount as a contribution.

Anyway I don't want to make it too complicated or patronising.
Sincerely and in good faith
Martin

Dear Daren

Thanks for that.

Yes as I thought the time line is..
Stellram S.P.ltd Setup by Howard Thomas London EC1Y 2DQ June 1980
Stellram s.p.ltd to Stellran ltd April 1981
Stellram ltd to Stellram Cuttech ltd 1993

So the Psion Organiser software dates from somewhere between 1981 to 1993
Somebody might know if this software got a mention in PSION News!

Stellram Cuttech ltd to Stellram ltd 1997
Stellram ltd to ATI Stellram ltd 2006
ATI Stellram ltd to Kennmetal Stellram ltd 2013
Kennmetal Stellram ltd disolved Aug 2017

2013 Kennametal acquisition of the tungsten materials business from Allegheny Technologies Inc, including the full line of Stellram metalworking tools (formerly ATI Stellram)

The address shows Bowerhill..
Bowerhill is a former RAF Station, bacame an industrial estate in the 1980's. Its history is remembered in the area's street names, in this case Avro Way. Relocated to Hercules Way SN12 6TS. In 1995 the phone numbers changed from 0225 to 01225

Looking forward to trying the software in Jape
Sincerely and in good faith
Martin

I received the packs, and I'll start working on putting it on my site. It may take a little while, as it has a 144 page manual.

Daren and Jaap

Thanks Daren for bringing this 'software' to our attention. Jaap great work again with the manual. I've read through it to get an idea of what they were doing with the Organiser and CNC's back in the 80's.

You can see the evolution if the organiser in the Manual. They start with and are then committed to a 2 line (probably) XP but by the end of the manual when considering interfacing with the different CNC Machines they are considering LZ Notepad files and Utils for file handling.

Interestingly they are suggesting using Notepad to manipulate the CNC files..
"When transmitting or receiving a file you are given the option to use one of three file types, it is suggested that you use the NOTES file type which enables you to use the built in NOTEPAD editor to view and edit your CNC files".

Sending and Receiving
"The Stellram systems are based on the Psion LZ range of pocket computers as these offer the all the file handling facilities required to store, edit and manage CNC programs."

Daren in the 'box' where you found the 'cutdata' packs was there any sign of "stellram's CNC Editor Software Pack"? Again mentioned in the Sending and Receiving Section.

Anyway thanks again chaps, It takes me back to when we were trying to interface with pen-plotters, Hewlett Packard Graphics Language, DIP switches and the rest. That was only 2 dimensions and was difficult enough.

Sincerely
Martin

Hi Jaap,

The OPK links to the pack currently give a 404.

Oops! I must have forgotten to upload them. Will fix that in a couple of hours.

Edit: The links should work now.
