Run-time error
« on: Jul 30th, 2009, 9:44am »

I just had to format my computer, and I'm still using Psion Organizer II with Psi2win build 268 that I downloaded from the site, but it doesn't work.
I did not have any problems installing it, but when I connect the PSION and run it, an error message pops up.
It reads "Run-time error '8020' Error reading comm device"
Is there a solution to this problem? I'm again, desperate, and in need of your expertise.

Many thanks

Uh, oh! Error 8020 is lousily documented. Microsoft says it happens only on Win2003 servers, but lots of messages on programmer forums indicate it happens on other versions as well. It seems to be some kind of bug in Microsofts ActiveX serial port driver.

Well, I need a lot of extra info to get a grip on the problem. You can help me by mastering the query below with an extra touch on accuracy:

  • when exactly does the error occur?
        - before the program launches
        - when you select the port
        - immediately after you press the Start button
        - when you initiate a transfer on the organiser
       when you least expect it
        - ...
Please try to find a pattern!

  • Did your computer ever mock about some system file while installing or using Psi2Win? If so, was it MSCOMM32.OCX?

  • What is your operating system? (Linux/WINE; Win7, 2008, Vista, MCE, 2003, XP, ME, 2000, 98SE, 98, NT4; did I miss one?)
  • Have you installed the latest service packs?

  • Did you edit psi2win.ini to get a port beyond COM1 to COM4?
  • Do you use a 'Serial-to-USB' converter? If so, have you installed a driver for it, and was it the latest one?

  • Is your computer equipped with up-to-date antivirus software?

I hate to ask the last question, but there is still the possibility that some spying program is monitoring your computer, possibly also the COM ports (physical, USB and BlueTooth). If so, this might explain why this rarely noticed system timing bug should ever come up.

I'm really interested in your findings, so please reply!

when exactly does the error occur?
        - the program highlights green COM1 and no error accur after I select that.
        - No error accurs after I press the Start button
        - The error accurs immediately after I initiate a transfer on the organiser.

There was nothing at all during or after the instalations of the program. No massage at all. But the MSCOMM32.OCX is in my register.

I did not make any changes to psi2win.ini file.

The operating system is Vista SP2, and the antivirus is Kaspersky (7.0.1.325) and both are up to date.
    I have instaled a Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM1)

I dont know how to answer your last question, but I can say that my laptop (VAIO VGN-AR41S) just came from repair after
a big problem with virus, and both hard drives were formated.

    Thak you for your effort.

I have already traced down the problem (some incompatibility of MSCOMM32 with certain USB drivers under Vista) and there will soon be a new version of Psi2Win which isn't using MSCOMM at all.

Please be patient for a few days.....
