[solved] Windows Vista

I've been using Psion Organizer II and Psi2win in my portable computer with Windows XP for 3 years, without any problem at all.
But now i have a new computer with the latest Windows Vista, and i think that my problems are just beggining.
When i start the program, the problem cames as falow:

Error 339 in load_Form:
Component' MSCOMM32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not
correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

Is there a solution to this problem?
I download new files from my Psion on a daylie bases, so i'm getting desperate.

I knew that this issue would come up one day....

Before I start swearing, please read this.

Next, I have to confess that you will run into similar problems using Linux so I am not going to swear for the moment

Third: Is there anybody out there who had this problem and has solved it?? Any help would be appreciated, since I neither have access to a Vista computer right now, nor do I wish to....

OK. I will see what I can do, but it may take a while. Hopefully this is just an installer flaw!

Paulo has successfully made Psi2Win work following a few of my suggestions, and I am now close to knowing what the problem is. I will upload an updated installer file ASAP, but for now you will have to do a few additional installation steps to make Psi2Win run on Vista.

Here are the steps: This is obsolete now, since the new installer supports Vista!
  • Download Psi2Win.msi and doubleclick it to run Windows Installer.
  • Download Psi2Win4Vista.zip
  • Doubleclick it and drag the Psi2Vista folder onto the Desktop.
  • Open the Psi2Vista folder and doubleclick SETUP. You should receive a few message boxes, if they report errors, write them down!
  • The Psi2Vista folder is no longer requred, you can delete it from the desktop now.
  • Now try to run Psi2Win (even if there were error messages)
  • If you succeed, congratulations, otherwise please report your problems to me (email address is below).

If you should run into other problems while using Psi2Win on Vista (e.g. settings are forgotten), it may help to go to Psi2Win's program folder (typically C:\Programs\Psi2Win), right click Psi2Win.EXE, select properties and click on the Compatibility tab. Check the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' checkbox, and choose Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the dropdown list below it. Also check the 'Run this program as an administrator' checkbox.

Again: this is a preliminary solution, if it sounds to complicated for you, just wait for a week or two, since I plan to release an updated installer ASAP.

I have just released a new version of Psi2Win!
It uses another installer now, and the problems with Vista have vanished.

I have tried build 267 of Psi2Win with Windows Vista Home Premium edition (which I keep updated), but get the same error message as PCristovao did, i.e. "Error 339 in load_Form:
Component' MSCOMM32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not
correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid."

Are others still having the same difficulty please, and is there a cure please?

Thankyou.

This is odd! The new installe DOES install MSCOMM32.OCX in the windows/system32 folder allright and it also registers it.

The only thing I can think of is that you have not allowed the installer to run under administrrator privileges. If so, repeat the installation.

Otherwise you can try the striked instructions above, but skip the first step (download ...msi).

Please send me an email if you don't succeed!

Many thanks for writing regarding this so promptly - on Christmas Eve as well!

Unfortunately the same error message still appeared after taking the steps you mention, including the 'strike through' ones (which ran without throwing up any errors).

Happily I'm not completely stuck as Psi2Win runs perfectly on my wife's Windows Xp computer, and I can run it on my pc by using a DOS boot floppy with the original cl.exe etc on it, but of course I have to have the relevant .ODB etc files also on the floppy, as DOS cannot read the NTFS oartitions.

I trust you have a good Christmas.

Regards,
