PSION II P464

Hi all , I'm new on here.
I did look at the FAQ but I am clueless with this device .
I have got the the device in good condition , it powers on to Error in Case:Mnt Missing Proc press space
Pressing space switches off .
On the back are two slots , a blank one first then a 32K data Pak .
My question is am I missing something to get it working ?
What do people use these for now ?
They look like great robust devices , any projects linking with Raspberry Pi etc .
Any help greatly appreciated
Cheers .

Dear Hawsey

Glad you could join us and welcome.

Following the link below will give you a run down on all the different versions of the Psion Organiser.

https://www.jaapsch.net/psion/galorg.htm

You will notice that your P464 is an industrial version of a 'shop bought LZ64' Now your P464 might have been supplied with some specific 'industrial' software that is trying to automatically boot when you switch on. That software could be on the 32k datapak or (less likely) in RAM or worse case built into a dedicated ROM on the main board.

Anyway this is what I would do with my LZ64 if it kept booting to an error. (1) Switch Off, (2) Remove the battery - underneath the bottom slot - leave the battery out for a while as the organisers were designed to hold a charge for battery changing. (3) Remove all (both) datapaks from the rear. (4) re-fit battery, if you can't be sure of the age of the one you have removed use a fresh one. (5) switch on - hopefully to a standard 4 line display [Find Save Diary etc..]

Problem with (5) switching on..

I have read somewhere about adapting 'industrial' organisers to normal use. Maybe Mikesan can help with this next time he is passing.

Let me know how you get on
Sincerely and in good faith
Martin Reid

PS Did you get a manual with it?

Hi,
Boris did address this, so try going here:
http://forum.psion2.org/YaBB.pl?board=fm_help;action=display;num=1262958 104;start=1

Or alternatively, use the 'Search' function of this forum and simply type in "bootable" and leave the default of all the categories etc ticked and you should come up with a variety of things to try.

However, I'd recommend Boris' Pos2Org conversion - but there's a slight problem with that in that you'll need to connect your Organiser II to a PC, which as you cannot get it to stay turned on, could be a problem.  You'd need to have a Datapak that has Pos2Org already made onto it, using the MAKE utility.

I'm guessing that you don't have a Comms Link, but I do.

Well, I won't normally offer this as a service, but if you can send me your machine and datapacks (well anything that you have with it), I'll take a look and see what I can do to start it up for you, however, NO PROMISES, other than if you pay for return shipping, I'll send it back.  OK?

Alternatively, if anyone else on this forum would like to make a Pos2Org pack, or already has one 'MAKEd' and just send it to you?  Anyone?  This way, you can just try Boris' solution out, but otherwise, I'd just play with the stuff that you send and try different options out.

POS2LZ64 - convert the POS 464 to a full working LZ64

Acknowledgements need to go to
Jaap Scherphuis & Terry Kitchener

Background reading

This problem has been solved before.
Forum thread
http://forum.psion2.org/YaBB.pl?board=fm_help;action=display;num=1046000 043

Where can you find the patch (POS2LX64)
Retro Software
http://www.retroisle.com/others/psion/organiser2/software.php

Archived Psion Organiser II website
http://archive.psion2.org/org2/org2.htm

So; as Mike says the issue for you is how to get the 'Boot patch' on to a datapak while the organiser is unusable. I would take Mike up on his offer.

You will not know this yet, but if you get it working, I suggest you will want a COMMs link cable (to connect the Organiser to a PC) a copy of Psi2Win (PC programme that does the PC end of the COMMs link, A power supply helps when writing to Datapaks, changing the battery and generally when the COMMs Link is connected. Also a copy of the PSION Organiser Developer (and Emulator CL2) to enable the PC to be used to develop Organiser 'stuff'.

Psi2Win (Suggest Build 304 has a great print facility)

Organiser Developer

Is this the 'thesourcerer' ebay address?

Mike / Martin , thanks for the replies , I do have I think the Comms cable , it has a power pack , says Comms link in yellow and has a pc seriel type connector on it .
I don't have a working PII however so am I correct in assuming I won't get it working without that ?
Mike thanks for the offer , I might do that if the offer still stands in a few weeks after my holls
I'll have a look at the links posted and see if I get anywhere .
Cheers

You'll need an Organiser II of any type to make the pak (you'll need a fresh one - or a Rampak) that will turn your POS machine into a standard one.

If there is no fault with the machine, then that's all that you should need.

I'm still confused , so do I need a functional non industrial PSION to get this going ?
What I have now is 3 X P464 , 2 32k Data Packs ,1 Comms cable .
Will this lot get me a working unit ?
Anybody is welcome to a unit if they like also .
Cheers

Your machine needs a pack to boot from, or it will simply switch off - WE THINK.  We can't get anywhere until we can get the machine to stay on. However, maybe your machine is damaged.  But we have to start somewhere.

So I'll tell you what I'll do.  You send me both of those Datapaks and I'll see if they are OK (and I'll copy them if there are any interesting apps on the ).  Then, I can maybe erase one of them - unlikely that you'd need both, but I can most likely rebuild a pak from the image that I'll take.  Then I'll put the POS2Org image on the pak and send it back to you so you can try it.  If it doesn't boot your POS machine, then it is some other issue.

So send me your two paks with a return address.

Check your PM on this forum for my postal address.

Nice work Mike, I hope 'hawsey' takes you up on the offer.

While I was doing some reading around the 'reconfiguring' of these (P)oint (O)f (S)ale organisers. I came accross this thread..

http://forum.psion2.org/YaBB.pl?board=faq_general;action=display;num=103

Where Boris outlines that Terry Kitcheners POS2LZ64(click loader)converts a P464 to an LZ64, rather than POS2ORG for 2 line machines.

Anyway, again thanks for making the offer to 'burn' his Datapaks - I wouldn't know where to start in building a pak. (That has got to be one of my next projects).

Sincerely Martin

Nice one Martin! Yes, that POS2LZ64 is definitely a better option to start with, so I'll use that instead if he takes me up on the offer. There is so much info in this forum now that it isn't always immediately apparent. Thanks for digging!

With regards to 'rebuilding', I really meant to imply 'making another one from an image', however, the info can be found at Jaap's site in a nice clear format:

https://www.jaapsch.net/psion/fileform.htm#bootpack

and we have a discussion about Datapaks here:

http://archive.psion2.org/org2/packs.htm#datapacks

Dear hawsay

I don't know if you have manuals for what is now your LZ64. Jaap has posted manuals on his Psion web pages

Operating Manual
https://www.jaapsch.net/psion/manlzop.htm

Programming Manual
https://www.jaapsch.net/psion/manlzpg.htm

A lot of early users taught themselves programming, If you want to give it a go, and as I intimated earlier you can get a 'developer' for the Personal Computer

Developer Manual
https://www.jaapsch.net/psion/mandevkit2.htm

Org2 (Organiser Developer for writing programmes on your PC)
Look for Organiser Developer at the bottom of this page..
https://www.jaapsch.net/psion/progs2.htm

Suggestions.. when using what is now a very old 'DOS' programme. When you unzip DevKit.Zip (the organiser developer) to your PC, put the files on drive C:\ very close to the root directory (I will not go into why now)

I Sugguest.
C:\Psion (put everything under here)
C:\Psion\Org2 (extract DevKit.Zip here) Run ORG2 from here it should run great from here.
C:\Psion\Psi2Win install Psi2Win_beta3_build303.exe to here (if you want to print from the organiser let me know)

Connecting your Organiser II to the PC
(server here) Psi2Win
http://forum.psion2.org/YaBB.pl?board=p2w_support;action=display;num=137 6846173

Anyway that is your home work for this week end

Let us know how you get on..

Sincerely Martin

Shout out to Boris and Jaap

I remove spammers ASAP, but people are becoming desperate for traffic these days and so will spend their precious human time to create an account and populate it with a junk message in the hope of gaining links.  Either that or they pay VAs (Virtual Assistants) from economies which cost less.  Sadly, it is a sign of the times.
