How do I connect the organiser to a modem?

How do I connect the organiser to a modem?
You need a 'CommsLink' which is a device that plugs into the top of the organiser and has a cable with a 25 pin female serial connector on the other end. It is designed to plug directly into a PC, so you will need a null-modem adapter to connect it to the modem.
A null-modem adapter looks exactly like a gender changer but is wired differently!

Usually this is all you need for cabeling, although Psion recommends to cut the lines 6<-->20 and 20<-->6. The reason is that DSR (6) and DTR (20) are connected inside the organiser and this fact might stop some modems from operating.

If your planning to transfer files, set PROTOCOL to XMODEM as described in How do I use the CommsLink with a PC?

In some cases you will have to experiment with different HAND(shake) settings to get the connection functional.

Has anybody used PSION protocol to transfer files to a PC running CL.EXE or similar over a modem?

Using the Psion Link Protocol over a modem?

I have never tried!

However, it should be possible with CL.EXE.
The PLP protocol seems to be capable of handling the situation.

Call an unattended PC:
Modem
- in autoanswering mode
- echo MUST be OFF!!
- quiet on connect (if possible)
The modem will constantly receive connect requests from CL. I hope it ignores them.

Contact an unattended organiser:
On the PC side, you would use a terminal prog to send the dialcode to the modem, exit and start CL.
On the Psion side you will probably wire RI(ng) to DTR to wake the organiser on an incoming call.

Again, I have not tried this!

Psi2Win at its current version behaves just like CL. But adding modem support has been on my todo list from the beginning. This feature will probably be part of the future Pro version.

Have done so. Very easy.

Have even contemplated trying to write a simple email programme.
The idea would go like this; A PC has 2xmodems and phone lines. Someone sends me an email, which is downloaded by the computer through modem #1.
The email has the right text in the subject line and is stored in the CommsLink folder as a simple text message. Now all I have to do is use my Org2 to call modem #2 and retrieve the message.
Of course it isn't that simple, but I believe it is possible. Sending an email from the Org2 on the other hand........
