How do I link the organiser to another computer?
You need the 'Comms Link' device that plugs into the top slot of the organiser. It has got a cable with a 25 pin female serial connector on the other end.

As most computers now have 9 pin serial plugs, you will probably need an adapter:

        (25pins male) <--> (9 pins female)

These are widespread, you will certainly get it at your local computer shop. You may also use a modem cable if the plugs fit (but not a 'null modem cable'!).

Of course, the commslink can be used with any apparatus that uses the RS232 communications standard, not only PCs.

If you are really into soldering, here's the pinout for the adapter:

DB 9  nameDB 25
   1 *DCD*    8
   2   RXD    3
   3   TXD    2
   4   DTR   20
   5   GND    1
   6   DSR    6
   7   RTS    4
   8   CTS    5
   9   *RI*   22

The asterisks denote lines that are not used by the organiser.

Things that may go wrong:

  • You have digged into your adapters box: The suited tool cannot be found, but there are two other adapters and using both the plugs would fit....

Don't do it, don't even try! Walk up to the next computer store and buy the right adapter!
    They're really cheap...

  • You discover that your commslink plug has pins instead of holes, scratch your head and mumble: "Strange, the manual says it's female!".....

In rare cases, the former user may have changed the plug, e.g. for connecting the organiser directly to a modem.
This special case is the only exception to the rules: Don't use gender changers or null-modem adapters! and Use only one adapter!: Use the adapter described above plus a 'null modem adapter' (which looks like a gender changer but is wired differently). Chances are that the combination will work for you.
